Never spend your money before you have it.

Before starting, I’d like to thank everyone for their interest in budgeting and saving money for travels. It’s important to stay on top of everything and pursue our dreams, even in times of crazy inflation rates. In order to do this, talking with others can be helpful – but it is of utmost significance to keep the communication open, just as we do right here.

Let’s be honest about one thing – if we want to travel around the world, there is no way we can do this without any money spent. The only ones who can are travel influencers and people with glucose guardians – not judging, just pointing out the obvious options. For the rest of the world, money can be saved while preparing for trips or while traveling. Without any further ado, let’s jump directly into our saving options.

1. Save 10-15% of everything you earn

You’ve most likely noticed I spend a lot of time reading – maybe not as much as I’d like, but still probably much more than the majority of the people on the planet. In one of the eye-opening books, I discovered the first postulate of growing wealth – saving at least 10% of everything you earn each month. Let’s be honest – most of us can spare this amount of money, however much we earn. All outstanding expenses can (mostly) be packed into the 90% of our income.

I’m not saying spend the whole 10% away on travels immediately. This postulate stems from asks of us to invest and help our capital grow. However, travel experiences are more worthy than any amount of money – remember that each time you feel bad for deciding to travel!

2. Utilize deals and offers

This absolutely works when you’re in no rush to see a specific destination and do not have fixed time off work. Most tour agencies will have nice last-minute offers, just to fill up the empty places they had already bought from hotels or partner agencies.

The biggest downside is that these will usually not take you to the most voluptuous destinations, so don’t expect to have this kind of tour to Bali. Still, it can be useful especially for seeing cities and landmarks in the geographical vicinity of your state or city.

3. Buy all tickets online in advance

This also goes for online check-ins, or any other kinds of actions that will directly save you money and put it back into your budget. In most cases, tickets purchased online will be cheaper than the ones bought directly on the spot or at the entrance. This will also create a good outline of your forthcoming journey and assist in organizing your time better.

4. Utilize discounts and upgrades provided by apps

Frequently traveling with the same airline will, in most cases, bring you a discount. Booking accommodation through the same app will, eventually, provide discounts and room upgrades. I’m not saying pick one airline, one app for accommodation and one for tickets/entries, as not all these are of equal quality, when compared to their competitors. However, if you find one to be suitable, use it for each next trip, until you unlock higher levels of membership.

5. Don’t waste money on paper guides (this also helps save the planet!)

Let me quickly remind you it’s the 21st Century AD. Most information ever generated can be found online. Do not waste money buying generic paper guides, when the information they contain has been found (believe it or not) on the Internet. Also, coming to your destination prepared will not steal the thrill of learning new things (you will only do it in advance), while it will keep you prepared and help you run the voyage more smoothly. Let’s also mention there’s no need to mass-print anything nowadays.

6. Try to stay within your means

Some people go out to travel just to splurge. There’s absolutely no need for this. I’m not saying, if you prepared $20 for a dinner, and you bump into your favorite restaurant where you’ll pay $25 – go for it! But it is absolutely needless to see random items and buy them. If you were able to live without most of the things you see in tour destinations so far, you’ll be able to do it in the future. I’m personally allergic to things like bottle/can openers with the inscription containing the name of the city or country visited. You can buy the same item in a local store at probably 1/5 or even 1/10 of the price, and it will evoke no fake memories. Stay true to yourself.

7. Set clear boundaries with yourself and others

Imagine this – you’re intolerant to grain products, but you’re in Italy and everyone around you (including your companions) are eating pasta. Do you just join them? Well, of course… NOT! Just because everyone around you is doing something, does not mean it is the right thing to do, or that that thing works well for you. Do not torture your stomach with foods you can’t digest just because everyone else is doing it.

Similarly, to that, if you’re in Barcelona, and say you really dislike the work of Antoni Gaudi – but everyone wants to see his Casas, and also Sagrada Familia. You truly don’t admire those and would rather spend your time in the aquarium. Need I say – just go to the aquarium!

We do not even notice how frequently we tend to do this, just to make our companions happy. Remember that “win-win or no deal” is always an option, and it’s the best one. If you can’t agree on a thing that you both / all of you want to do, it is wrong for one person to sacrifice their precious time, just so everyone else would enjoy themselves. Stay true to yourself, as well as your friends!
