๐ฟ Top 10 Landmarks to Visit in Bali in 2024 (Part I)

โLouise James
Before diving in, letโs break a common misconception. On a map of Indonesia, Bali looks like a tiny speck next to Java. However, its actual size is larger than islands like Mauritius or some in the Philippines.
That being said, choosing only 10 places to recommend is a challenge. During my two-week stay, these were the top must-see locations I experienced firsthand.

๐ฆ 1. Garuda Wisnu Statue
Even though itโs neither a beach nor a forest, this remains my top pick in Bali. The Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Statue is among the tallest statues in the world, standing 122 meters (400 feet) highโa mind-blowing feat considering volcanic and earthquake activity in the region.
โจ Why visit?
The tallest Hindu deity statue in the world.
Represents Garudaโs search for Amrita, the elixir of life.
Surrounded by a lush park filled with statues, temples, and Balinese culture.
Even as a non-religious person, this place felt sacred and peacefulโa truly enlightening experience.

๐๏ธ 2. Dreamland Beach
My favorite beach in Bali, hands down. Imagine swimming in the Indian Ocean while light, warm raindrops create an ethereal experience. ๐โจ
๐ Why visit?
Stunning cliffs & turquoise water (resembling Thailand or the Philippines).
Hidden paradise away from crowded beaches.
The resort atop the hill offers the best scenic views and much-needed refreshments.
If you ever get the chance, swimming here in the rain is an unforgettable experience.

๐ฏ 3. Uluwatu Temple
Perched on dramatic cliffs, Uluwatu Temple is one of Baliโs most iconic spots. Itโs famous for two things:
1๏ธโฃ The monkeys that call the temple forest home.
2๏ธโฃ The Kecak Dance at sunset, where the sun melts into the ocean.
๐ Did you know? The swastikas seen at the temple are ancient Hindu symbolsโcompletely unrelated to their unfortunate misuse in history. They symbolize separation between common temple grounds and sacred prayer areas.

๐ And the monkeys? Theyโre not as aggressive as you might thinkโunless you ignore the warnings (like I did). I left my water bottle unattended for just a moment, andโBAMโa monkey snatched it and bit it open. Lesson learned.
The Kecak Dance ceremony is a must-see! There are multiple performances daily, but the sunset show is the one to experience. Even if your travel agent fails to provide details (as ours did), youโll still be mesmerized by the breathtaking ocean backdrop.
Regardless of your familiarity with Balinese traditions, youโll instantly recognize Hanuman, the monkey god, as he plays a key role in the performance. The most incredible part? Dozens of men chanting in perfect harmony for an hour, creating an immersive and almost hypnotic rhythm for the dancers. An absolutely unforgettable experience!

๐ฅ 4. Any Surf Camp
As someone who grew up nowhere near an ocean, surfing was never on my radar. But let me tell youโstanding on a surfboard for even 2 seconds feels like a lifetime achievement! ๐โโ๏ธ
๐ Why try surfing in Bali?
Beginner-friendly waves at beaches like Kuta or Canggu.
Affordable lessons (around 200K IDR = $12-15 USD).
The thrill of riding the waves for the first time!
If youโre serious, you can even join a surf camp (10-15 days) for โฌ800-โฌ2,000 ($860-$2,200 USD). And guess what? Thatโs exactly what Iโm saving for next!

๐๏ธ 5. Bintang Store in Seminyak
๐ Bargaining in Bali can be exhausting. This store? Fixed pricesโno hassle. Unlike many markets where negotiation is expected, Bintang Store offers transparent pricing, making shopping stress-free.
โจ Why visit?
Everything is fairly priced (cheaper than bargaining elsewhere).
Great for snacks, souvenirs, toiletries, and daily essentials.
You can actually shop in peace without negotiating for every single item.

Youโll find everything from groceries to souvenirs at great prices. For instance, I picked up three ultra-soft toothbrushes for just $3.50, whereas a similar pack elsewhere would cost $18. And donโt forget to grab some affordable local snacks, gifts, and essentials!

๐๏ธ A Short Break Before Part II
Bali is a unique paradise, where every step feels like a new adventure. I could talk about it for daysโand so could anyone who visits!

๐บ Coming up in Part II: More breathtaking temples, waterfalls, and hidden gems you donโt want to miss!
In the meantime, feel free to reach out if you need help planning your Bali stay!
