How to (properly) organize a summer vacation

If you get tired learn to rest, not to quit.

Last week, I received too many calls, asking about where I am going next, why I am off social media (again) and where’s my blog post last Tuesday. News flash for everyone: I was packing my suitcase, getting ready for my upcoming summer holiday! (No worries, I’m still alive, just enjoying myself.)

Other than that, I keep being asked how to properly organize a summer holiday. Most people I know tend to take two weeks of paid time off from work, only to travel between the first and the second Wednesday. Some of them even asked me how to waste less time, or why the flights are so expensive. The summer is here – you are as willing to read, as I am to sit in front of a burning laptop and write. Without any further ado, here’s short and sweet top 10 on how to properly organize a summer holiday.

1. Avoid nearby destinations

Most good vacay destinations are off the coast of Africa, or somewhere along the Equator in East Asia or the Caribbean. Most of these are not the very friendly in summer – whether due to drought, flood, monsoons or other locally specific reasons. If you really need some rest, you want to aim for one of these places. However, there are much better seasons than summer for visiting them. Keep reading, more information will flow out of another point on the list.

2. Avoid air traffic

For some perverse reason, air carriers adore moving around or even cancelling flights with no reason. I personally haven’t worked at an airport, but I did hear it from the people who have – you really don’t need a Nobel prize in all sciences to be able to properly run airport logistics. Why the companies love to play this annoying game – beats me, beats anyone. But, they do, and the passengers have no say in it. Unless you live in the middle of Germany or Nebraska, and if you have a faster route to the sea by land, opt for this path during summer, to avoid wasting nerves unnecessarily.

3. Avoid popular destinations

This one goes without saying. Everyone will be in popular destinations, and you will have no peace to yourself. Either opt for a village near a popular destination (as long as it’s clean and has an exit to the beach, it’s acceptable), or add more funding to go across the world.

4. Work within your budget

This one should go without saying. If you have money to splurge, and you really want and need to pamper yourself, go for it. On the other hand, for those who need to bring food along and cook during their vacay time, don’t run away from vacation! Just because you’re cooking in a different country does not imply that you’re losing. On the contrary, you are winning because you used all the means necessary to get to a better place. Enjoy yourself!

5. Don’t take two weeks off it’s not a must

Most people I’ve met so far usually take two weeks off in the summer. Why? If you ask them, they would not have a valid response. They learned this from their parents, who learned it from theirs, and so on. Some people must do this, as they are blessed with children, who must go to school outside of the summer months. On the other hand, if you are blessed with no children, avoid the summer for summer vacay. Every good destination is incomparably better in May, September and some even October and November, than from June through August.

6. Work from your destination (where applicable)

I know that many digital nomads read this blog. It is not necessary for them to understand this. For those of you who are allowed to work remotely (or at least hybrid), you need not shy away from your dream destination because you require 21 days that your company will not allow. Stay even longer and bring your laptop along. And use your off days wisely. You’re welcome.

7. Wait for winter

Back to square one. If you avoid popular and nearby destinations, you can actually start paying in advance or even save up money to go on a summer vacation in winter. I once read a tweet, that has resonated with me since forever (and will continue in the same manner) – if I could afford a summer and a winter holiday, I’d pay for two summer holidays instead. Cheers!

8. Have that +1 ready to tackle an adventure with you

Do you have your favorite travel buddy? If not, it’s high time you got one! Mine always tags along with me. (Still a better love story than “Twilight”.) Remember that hotels become up to 100% more expensive for solo travelers – and this is what we need to fight against. Your travel buddy will relieve you a part of the unnecessary cost, and you will have an amazing time together.

9. Plan for leisure, not running around metropoles

This coming from someone who loves to spend their leisure time getting tired is absolutely wrong. Yet, I am headed for a week of splurge right now. We all need to be in touch with our body and mind, and understand when we can run around, as well as when we require rest. Just act accordingly. A week in the mountains, at a lake, or in a spa will be beneficial, if you don’t want to go to a sea or ocean cost in the summer.

10. Organize multiple trips (where applicable)

This one goes without saying for paid time off in general, not only for the summer. If you have exactly two weeks (Mon-Fri) off work, don’t wait for Wednesday to travel. Your PAID time off starts Monday, but your ACTUAL time off starts as soon as your Friday shift ends. And it starts in three Mondays. Feel free to book a trip Saturday to Saturday, move to a new location Saturday through Wednesday, and finish it off with an extra trip until your PTO ends. You’re welcome.

Bon voyage, I’ll publish my vacay pics in the upcoming posts.
