How much courage does a solo trip cost?

#travel #inspiration #experience #challenge #interview

My legacy is that I stayed on course… from the beginning to the end, because I believed in something inside of me.

The time has come! The first reader that approached me with their story of a solo trip! This is a close friend of mine, who shared she was inspired by my story of doing things alone. Just to remind you, alone is not a synonym for lonely – these are two words with completely different backgrounds and meanings, simply stemming from the same root.

When I first started blogging, I wanted to share my story of success – not to brag, but to inspire and motivate others to muster up enough courage to do the same. Of course, I had in mind that not everyone likes to travel. But it gives us endless significance doing things we like, on our own! For example, me going to a soccer game alone – this would just be boring, I could do it because it takes up zero of my courage and energy. I’d spend time on my phone, surrounded with countless loud people, nothing particular happening in my head. That’s no success. Thus, I also understand people who can go traveling to watch their phone the whole time. That adds no value. However, doing things we love, alone (and I, apparently, love to travel) – now this makes us greater people.

My great friend, Sandra, inspired by my example, decided to do the same for herself. Without any further ado, let’s jump into the interview, showing everyone how great of an experience it is to be completely alone doing something you love!

  • Sandra, thank you for taking your time to share with a wider audience what your solo travel experience looked like. Would you be so kind to tell us something about yourself – whatever you feel like sharing?
  • Thank you, Igor, for inviting me to your courageous world. Humble by nature, I can introduce myself as an economist by occupation, philosopher by vocation, Belgradian in heart and Hamburger according to current address. In general, a very decisive Libra.

  • What made you decide to go on a solo adventure?
  • The idea came from you, as the topic I never thought about – which happens very rarely. I got intrigued because it is simple and doable, but yet brave and, honestly, not on the bucket list for many I know. So, you bought me with “HOW DARE YOU?!”, a question that I hear almost every day of my life.

  • How long did it take for you to decide you want to do this?
  • It must have been a month until I finally packed my backpack. As you know, and all the others blessed by the FON (Faculty of organizational science) experience, it’s all in good organization!

  • Tell us something about your destination – what was the most amazing part of the experience?
  • Ahoy! My destination was Flensburg, a small German town, near the Danish border. Super sweet little harbor, famous for rum, Danish ice cream and Bismarckhering (pickled herring). Beautiful sunny day was even better after rum tasting and listening to the old pirate stories in the Rum Museum. One day was really enough to explore everything in the city and somehow understand myself better.

  • How much courage did your trip cost, if not a secret?
  • With the new Deutschland ticket, my expenses were only related to food. That information I would like to keep away from the public, as well as from myself.

  • Would you recommend the destination to others, who are thinking about solo adventures? And why?
  • I would recommend it, of course, but I would even go further and say try any city two hours away from you, or more if you have the time – it really is not about the place, it is about you. However, charming little Flensburg would not disappoint.
  • Are you looking forward to a new solo adventure? And if so – when (and where)?
  • I love traveling by train, maybe that is where Agatha in me gets her inspiration from. I have already looked into direct connections and made a list of places that I want to visit during this summer. The next one is a famously rich little place called Sylt. This is actually an island in the Frisian archipelago in the North Sea.

  • Can’t wait to hear about that! Did you have any enlightenment moments during the solo trip?
  • For someone who truly believes in knowing herself, I was fascinated with my personal inner fight, happening at that moment. The biggest obstacle was waiting for the train to arrive. It was Saturday morning, one of the rare sunny days in Hamburg and I was standing there at the station 300 meters (1000 feet) away from my apartment, waiting for a train that was already 20 minutes late. Should I stay or should I go back home? There were no prearranged plans with anyone, there were no tickets paid, no one was waiting for me, nobody even knew where I was going. There was nothing that could stop me going back home, if I would just turn around, it would be like nothing had happened. At that moment I realized that I am doing this only for myself. I dare to say maybe for the first time in my life. It is scary to admit how little we are doing simply and only for ourselves. After all, we are social creatures!

  • What new food did you try out, and how did it feel?
  • My biggest courageous step was trying the raw fish – herring prepared in the traditional way, by pickling. Bismarckhering got the name from the German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898), who was very fond of this way of preparing herring. He once said: “If herring were as expensive as caviar, people would appreciate it far more.” Based on current market trends, I would say that he was right. The fish is great but it needs more social media coverage and mayonnaise.

  • What is your dream destination? And why is it your dream to go there?
  • Saint Tropez was my dream until I went there, same happened to Paris. Big expectations are not good for my heart. Now my dream destination is a place called home, wherever that is, but also Cuba. Cuba is simple, in my mind it is a place without stress, only joy and dancing, like last resort in this escalating world.

  • What’s the one thing you want to do better on your next solo trip?
  • I would give myself more time to really feel the atmosphere and vibe of the city. This is barely possible when you are with someone, but even alone one must truly relax and let the new sounds, smells and colors sink in. Every city is like a living being with its tradition, history and present, give it time. It is like a blind date with a city you know only from the Internet, but don’t get carried away because you are paying.

  • What has this solo adventure encouraged you to do in your life? Any big steps that you required this for?
  • Being exposed to making a decision to jump into any train and disappear for a day is a rewarding feeling, and once again I am grateful to you Igor for this inspiration. This adventure definitely opened up my world, I faced myself and learned about the walls I built around me. I think some of us forgot that feeling when our parents would finally open the door and simply say: Go outside and play! That moment when you are scared and happy at the same time. You are finally free, the whole block is your playground, but where would you start?!

  • Any questions for me?
  • How would you explain our inherited need to travel in groups with individualism we as society are aiming for at this moment? Just kidding, I would only like to know who was your own inspiration?
  • Haha, good one! The first question – humanity is a contradictory civilization, that’s the best I can do. The second question, I wouldn’t really know the answer. I remember in high school, I used to have to do lots of (unnecessary) reading. I memorized a plethora of characters from the Romantic era having this strange urge to travel and leave their place of being. As I don’t necessarily recall most of their names instantly, I would not say any of them inspired me. However, I do remember saying “well this is the only smart thing that happened in this book” – for most of the books. In a way, I guess I inspired myself, but cross-referenced it with people (even imaginary) who would do the same. Now I can cross-reference myself to you – you’ll be my inspiration for the next solo adventure! And now I can’t wait to go to an unknown place.

  • Any final words for our faithful readers?
  • Try to be yourself from time to time, don´t be afraid – it is just like spontaneous rum tasting at 10AM, you will love it!

I want to thank my great friend Sandra for this wonderful time spent together, talking about her solo adventure. This marks the official start of my “Interview” section – why should I take all the credit for solo trips, when I know there are many of you doing the same? Step forth, and show the world why this experience is so valuable and life-changing to you. Until next time, I wish you to be inspired by Sandra’s words of wisdom. And Sandra, looking forward to hearing about your next adventure (and hopefully one including me, as well).
