Prague Old Town

Connecting the dots through mystery – Prague

#prague #czechrepublic #centraleurope #travelblogger #adventure

Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old.

It all started in 2019. For my whole life, I’d known countless people who’d been to the Czech capital, only to forever stay entangled in its atmosphere and charm. They created a dream in my head, yearning to understand the gothic vibe of Prague, the city most shrouded in mystery, from all of Medieval Europe. What happened in 2019 – the agency decided to cancel the trip a week ahead of time, and I had to satisfy myself with a visit to Tuscany. A pandemic and an Achilles’ tendon injury later, I promised myself to finally visit this marvelous gem of old times, and fulfill my own desire at last, even if it meant going alone! (Hint: It did mean going alone.)

The astronomical clock

What makes Prague what it is?

The Astronomical clock and a few sharp towers. There, I solved the puzzle for you. For a city that inspired countless novels, card game characters, myths and legends, you’d expect a great amount of detective work just to discover the basics. When, in reality, a simple sentence gives you all the necessary background. Now, of course, if you want to head down each path and listen to stories about crime and mystery, golems (yes, and not only was it breaking news, but also inspiration for an episode of one of my favorite cartoon series – Gargoyles), the plague (another pandemic, apparently), or any other obscure line of storytelling, you’re definitely bound to have a lot of fun. The Astronomical clock normally provides a show for its spectators every full hour, so try to be there ahead of time – if you want to record it.

Prague square

Countless tourists

Now, this is a regular trap when visiting popular places. I well remember my birthday trip to Paris, where one couldn’t traverse a street and not get into a line of pedestrians. On the contrary, this was not the case in Rome, at least not last winter or summer – despite the fact Rome is probably the most popular city in Europe. The difference is that the squares in Prague were built for the needs of medieval times, not of the 21st century. So, it is completely normal to expect a crowd wherever you look. It really makes photo sessions more difficult, whether that is the reason of your arrival, or not.

Prague human statue

Over-inflated prices

One would expect that, after seeing some of the metropoles in the Balkan Peninsula, spending money in the European Union would not be a problem. And that is true for expensive countries, such as Germany, France or Belgium. But it is not true for Czech Republic, especially not for Prague. No matter how much money you dispose with each month, if you want to visit Prague, you’ll need to bring extra. The city is immeasurably more expensive than the nearby Vienna, or especially Bratislava. Now this has nothing to do with the city itself, but it is one of its main characteristics – and something you’d need to reconsider (and recount) before heading this way.

Prague cathedral

Karluv Most (Karl’s Bridge)

This large construction is the epitome of Prague – it is a straight line of the most significant things the city has to offer, taking pedestrians across the Vltava River. It is ornamented by statues with mostly biblical motives, extremely sharp and aggressive in appearance. This is one of the most common traits of the Prague gothic, as walking down this path can definitely raise an atmosphere of a horror movie. Or at the very least a movie about vampires. Or golems. Remember that all agencies take their voyagers to different destinations during the day. Do not return at night, unless you wish to miss all the haunting fun.

Prague city center

Cathedrals. Cathedrals everywhere!

Remember the pointed rooftops? Well, the cathedrals are full of them. And they are the most significant landmark of the city – despite the fact the majority of the Czech population has gone atheist in the past decades. Still, the cathedrals remain as the hallmark of Medieval times, when the city of mystery was in its full potential. Everywhere you go, you’ll have a feeling of walking through a maze, still living Medieval times, and only the clothes of the passers-by will provide the wake-up blow. All the buildings with sharp rooftops have truly maintained great form. Even if you don’t really like the city in the end, you’ll have to stand in awe of the architectural wonder.

The narrowest street in the world

As in my story about Atomium, I’m truly not a fan of things that are a museum of itself, and have no other significance. What kind of significance would you expect the narrowest street in the world to have? Exactly.

Still, if you do not visit the city in an overly crowded period (like myself, in August), you can definitely walk through it. Luckily, the street is short enough for the claustrophobia not to kick in. Also, you can most probably find a book about a mystery surrounding it. If it fascinates you, why not. I (apparently) won’t.

Dresden square photo session

Base for visits to Dresden and Karlovy Vary

These two cities are quite close to Prague and are often in offer as one-day excursions. And in all honesty, for the most important landmarks, you will not even need the whole day in either of them. Dresden is a smaller German city, right across the Czech border. And since both countries are in the EU, normally there should be no border police or official crossings. The most intriguing thing is how both Dresden and Prague were built in a very similar fashion, despite the facts they belong to two countries with utterly unshared histories. Although Dresden is a landmark of Medieval times, it is also full of surprises from the Avant-garde that you are not expecting to find. Again, even if you turn out not to like the city, it will most certainly add up to the gothic atmosphere of everything seen in Prague.

Karlovy Vary, on the other hand, is a completely different concept. This city lies on mineral and thermal water sources, and this is exactly what it is popular for. You can approach thermal springs and collect some of naturally boiling water. Again, you will encounter legends, for example which spring water should be used by women or men, for different legendary reasons. Also, you will be able to buy overpriced chalices, the size a bit larger than a shot glass. If this is how you want to spend your money, I won’t try to stop you. However, if you wish to treat yourself to a true spa day, I’ll rather recommend Vrnjačka Banja in Serbia, or Morahalom Spa in Hungary.

Dresden square

All in all, my conclusion in Prague was not to ever again visit a place with high expectations. Countless people, probably most humans I’d ever met have told me the following: If there were a list, number 1 would be Prague, then a whole Earthful of cities, and then all the other cities. With all due, as well as honest respect, without a need to cast a shadow or offend anyone, I give Prague a 2/10. Had I come with no expectations, it would probably still not be higher than a 4/10. This does not mean there is anything wrong with the city, but it is a great story of how unrealistic expectations smother the beauty of things. And truly, beauty is something Prague is abundant with. Just remember to visit it with a free mind. And enough cash.

In my next post, see how Prague compares to its neighboring Bratislava, in objective aspects.
