🌍 Discovering Chisinau: The Underrated Gem of Europe

✨ “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”

Marcel Proust

Chisinau is a city that left me questioning my school curriculum—why had I never been taught about its existence, but had to find out about it by googling flights a few years ago? Stepping off the plane, I didn’t expect to hear so much Russian and so little English. Unlike Warsaw, where even non-English speakers could point me in the right direction, here, communication felt like a different challenge. The customs officer, after studying my passport, asked if I had “changed my family”—a puzzling question until I realized that “familia” in Russian means last name, not family. What they saw on their screen upon scanning my passport remains a mystery, but I was admitted into Moldova, ready to explore a place that felt both hidden and historic.

🏡 A Stay Near Lacul Morilor

I was lucky to stay in a charming neighborhood near Valea Morilor Lake, surrounded by parks and embassies. My host was a fantastic, outgoing person, and staying here felt like stepping into a different world—one I highly recommend (You can find it on Booking, under the name of “One room in apartment in the park center area of Chisinau“, in case the link expires).

🌊 The Hidden Treasures of Valea Morilor Lake

This picturesque lake is more than just a scenic spot—it hides some delightful surprises:

  • The Little Prince’s Rose 🌹 – Inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic, this small yet touching monument is a tribute to the timeless tale of love and adventure.

  • Duck House of Luck 🦆 – A tiny floating house on the lake, built for ducks but believed to bring good fortune to those who stop and admire it. (Sad to see someone left trash on it.)

  • Cascade Stairs & the Rotonda ⛰️ – Climbing the grand Cascade Stairs is a fun workout, but the real reward is reaching the beautiful Rotonda at the top, offering a stunning view of the entire area. At the bottom of the stairs, a charming statue of two children and a dog captures a playful moment, adding warmth and character to the already picturesque surroundings.

🌳 Chisinau’s Parks: Green Escapes

Chisinau is full of peaceful parks where locals relax, stroll, and escape the city’s bustle. Two standouts are:

  • Dendrarium Park 🌿 – A lush botanical garden perfect for quiet walks.

  • Alunelul Public Garden 🌳 – A smaller but equally charming space to take in the local atmosphere.

🏛️ Museums: A Glimpse into Moldova’s History

The city’s museums are as beautiful outside as they are inside (more on their exhibits in my next post!):

  • National History Museum 📜 – A must-see for history buffs.

  • National Museum of Fine Arts of Moldova 🎨 – A stunning building filled with artistic masterpieces.

  • National Museum of Ethnography & Natural History 🦴 – A cultural and scientific journey through Moldova’s past and traditions.

✝️ The Must-Visit Metropolitan Cathedral

No matter your beliefs, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ’s Nativity is a must-see. This stunning architectural masterpiece is beautifully adorned both inside and out. Right nearby, you’ll find:

  • The Triumphal Arch 🎗️ – Built in the 19th century to celebrate the Russian Empire’s victory over the Ottoman Empire, this arch stands as a proud symbol of history.

  • Stephen the Great Monument 🏇 – A tribute to one of Moldova’s greatest rulers, Stefan cel Mare, whose influence shaped the nation’s history.

  • Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt Boulevard 🏙️ – The city’s main artery, lined with shops, cafés, and vibrant city life.

✨ Final Thoughts

Chisinau is a small but dazzling city that reveals a different, lesser-explored side of Europe. If you’re looking for a destination that combines history, nature, and culture with an authentic local charm, this is the place to be. A hidden gem? Absolutely. A must-visit? Without a doubt.
